Wausau man recalls early days of space shuttle program
WAUSAU (WAOW) -- When NASA recently wrapped up its space program, it led a Wausau man to recall working in the program's early days.
Gary Hall served as a recovery specialist in the Army in White Sands, New Mexico in the late 1960s and early 1970s. At the time, engineers were trying to figure out how to safely return pieces of the spacecraft back to earth.
Hall says the experience sparked a special interest in the space program.
"This was the very early part of the space shuttle," said Hall. "Last week when they put it to bed, I started remembering."
Now that the Shuttle Atlantis is headed to the Smithsonian, Hall says he's sad to see the program come to an end.
