(CNN)--Dozens of wild ponies splashed around the waters off Virginia today.
The so-called pony swim is an annual event and it's now in its 86-th year.
Tens of thousands of spectators gather to to watch the animals swim across this channel to Chincoteague Island.
From there, they'll be led to nearby carnival grounds where some will be auctioned off to benefit the local fire department.
The sales are a way to keep the herd's size down to around 150.
