Wis county approves benefits for domestic partners

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee County Board has approved a proposal allowing health insurance benefits to same-sex or opposite-sex domestic partners of county workers.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports County Executive Chris Abele has promised to sign the measure, voted on Thursday.

An estimate by county board staff said the benefit would be used by about 50 county workers and cost about $742,000 a year. The benefit would start next year.

Supervisor Eyon Biddle Sr. told supervisors adding the benefit was a matter of equality and civil rights.

Supervisor Joe Sanfelippo said the issue should be delayed until fall and considered with the county's 2012 budget, which faces a projected shortfall of up to $55 million.
