WISCONSIN RAPIDS (Press Release) - The Madison Mallards jumped out to a 2-0 lead Tuesday night, but two runs in the second and three in the third had the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters back on top early and sent them to a 7-4 victory at Witter Field.
A fielder's choice ground ball coupled with a Mallards error, scored the first Rafters run of the night. Then, with two on and still now one out, Justin Jirschele began a three hit two RBI night at the plate, by driving home the tying run.
In the third, the Rafters went on the attack again, putting the first three runners on base. A wild pitch scored the go-ahead third run with Sam Montgomery batting. Then, after a Montgomery walk and a strike-out, Jirschele stepped up with another RBI knock to give the Rafters a 4-2 advantage. After another strike-out, the bases remained loaded for Garrett Novinski who worked a two out walk to make it 5-2 Rafters.
Cam Seidl made the spot start for the Rafters and settled down after allowing two in the first inning. While he did weave in and out of trouble, Seidl held the Mallards scoreless for the final three frames of his four inning start. Skyler Debilzen worked a single inning of relief in the fifth and allowed a pair of runs, all scoring with two outs, to make it 5-4.
The Rafters bounced back offensively in their half of the inning. Jirschele singled with two outs to put himself squarely in the middle of the attack again. Novinski, working on a two RBI day, eventually singled Jirschele home to make it 6-4. When Bart Steponovich scored on an errant return throw to the pitcher, the Rafters had a three run lead again and the final 7-4 margin.
Kevin Wild held down the Mallards over the sixth, seventh and eighth. Wild struck out six and walked two, stranding runners on base in the seventh and eighth inning. Joie Dunyon then worked a scoreless ninth. He issued a two out walk, but got the final out on the very next pitch for his fifth save, with Wild getting credit for the win.
After a one game trip to Madison, the Rafters return home Thursday August 4.
