MADISON (AP) -- Sen. Rob Cowles of Allouez has defeated his Democratic challenger in one of six recall elections targeting Republican incumbents in the Wisconsin Senate.
Unofficial results in Tuesday's election show Cowles captured 58 percent of the vote compared with 42 percent for Democrat Nancy Nusbaum with 81 percent of precincts reporting.
His was the first of the six races called Tuesday.
Democrats were trying to knock off at least three Republican incumbents to give them a chance at retaking majority control of the Senate they lost in the 2010 election. The recalls were spurred over anger related to the passage of Gov. Scott Walker's proposal taking away most union rights from nearly all public workers.
Two Democrats face recall elections on Aug. 16.
Cowles has been in the Senate since 1987.
