WATERLOO, IA (Press Release) - For the second straight night the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters watched the Waterloo Bucks put the tying run on base in the ninth, but again the Rafters withstood a late onslaught to win their third game in a row, 12-10 in Waterloo.
Handily in front by a 12-3 margin into the bottom of the ninth, Drew Noble retired the first two Bucks in the inning with ease. But before recording the third out, the Bucks notched eight hits, a walk and seven runs against Noble and two other relievers. Joie Dunyon finally recorded the final out with a three pitch strike-out, stranding the tying run at second base, ending the game, and avoiding a mammoth collapse.
The Rafters dominated the Bucks for the first eight innings, amassing twelve runs on thirteen hits. On the defensive side, Brad Douthit held the Bucks to just two runs, scattering five hits over seven innings to pick up his team high fifth win of the season. Douthit struck out six batters and walked only two.
A Garrett Nash double led off the game and set the table early. Sam Montgomery, Brandon Hohl and Alex Edward all picked up RBI base hits in the first to spot the Rafters a 3-0 lead. Josh Cyr doubled and scored on an error in the fourth and Justin Jirschele drove home a fifth Rafters run with a ground out. Then with two on, Montgomery blew the game open, capping a five run inning with a three run home run to give the Rafters an 8-0 lead.
Leading 8-2 in the seventh, the Rafters offense exploded for a third multi-run inning on the night. Nash again set the table, singling with one out. A hit batter and single loaded the bases for Hohl who picked up his second RBI of the game when he was hit by the pitch. Edward then drove in two more with a single, before Josh Cyr brought the 12th run of the night home with a ground out.
With the win, the Rafters have now won three in a row for the second time this season, moving their second half record to 15-17. Tuesday also marks the fifth time this summer the Rafter scored double digit runs.
The Rafters return home Wednesday August 10 to take on the Eau Claire Express at 7:05.
