Polls open in State Senate recall races

MADISON (AP) -- Polls are open in two Wisconsin Senate recall races.

Democrats will try to hold the ground they gained in last week's recall elections by fending off Republican attempts to oust two senators opposed to Gov. Scott Walker's proposal curbing collective bargaining for public employees.

Sen. Bob Wirch of Pleasant Prairie faces first-time candidate Jonathan Steitz, a Kenosha attorney. Jim Holperin of Conover is challenged by Kim Simac of Eagle River. She would be the first tea party candidate elected to the state Senate if she wins.

Democrats captured two of six recalls last week targeting Republicans. That means the best they can manage from Tuesday's elections is to keep the ground they gained, which left the Senate in Republican control by a narrow 17-16 margin.
