State teachers union will respect votes of locals

Posted:

MADISON (AP) -- The head of Wisconsin's largest teachers union says it will leave it up to its local affiliates as to whether to hold annual votes to remain in existence as required in the state's new collective bargaining law.

Wisconsin Education Association Council President Mary Bell said Monday that because of a number of factors including timing and cost, recertification will be an "unrealistic option" for some local union affiliates.

School district unions have until Sept. 30 to decide whether to hold a vote on staying organized as a union. Fifty-one percent of everyone in the bargaining unit, not just those casting ballots, must agree to staying together or else the union will be decertified.
