Residents react to Labor Day Parade

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) - Republican Lawmakers are banned from a celebration that dates back to the early 1880's.

"Several union leaders in the New York City area proposed that there be a day set a side to mark the accomplishments of organized labor."

UWMC Professor James Lorence said the focus was not on politics.

"It was to be a day that commemorated the contribution that workers made to creating wealth in America."

Nancy Tabaka-Stencil said she stands by the decision not to invite republican lawmakers. She believes the holiday is for union workers.

"I am going to the parade because it is a celebration. Labor day started with the unions and I personally don't belong to a union but I look at the benefits that they have done for us through the years."

Charles Lundeen said it's an open forum.

"I feel that it should be for everybody because it's out in the public, it's not like it's closed or anything."

Or a way to promote an agenda that has transformed though time.

"Any time you put people in the street to show what kind of power they have or how many feet can put on the street, that's indirectly a political statement"
