Sinise honors wounded vets at SC's Lt. Dan Weekend
BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- Veterans who were severely wounded in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are getting to relax during the four-day Lt. Dan Weekend on the South Carolina coast.
The second annual event includes a concert by actor Gary Sinise's Lt. Dan Band on the waterfront in Beaufort on Friday.
Sinise played the role of Lt. Dan -- a character who lost his legs in the Vietnam War -- in the 1994 movie "Forrest Gump." Much of the film was shot in the Beaufort area.
Since then, Sinise has been active in veterans' affairs and his band routinely plays for vets. He also has a foundation that raises money to support those in military and the nation's first responders.
Sixty-five vets, their caregivers and family members are attending the Lt. Dan weekend.
