(WAOW) - Runners from 58 teams made their way to Wausau for one of the biggest and best cross country meets in the state, the 55th annual Bill Smiley Invitational.
Wausau East's Ashley Eckhoff captured the girls' division one title for the second straight season, besting last year's time by five seconds at 14 minutes, 46.30 seconds
Wausau West took the team title with Sarah Poirier coming in at 15:09.85.
For the boys, Stevens Point's Michael Larson has lost just one race this season and Saturday, he won the Smiley in 16:15.88.
In the division two and three race, the Nekoosa boys brought home the team title, while Tomahawk was the top girls' team in division two/three with a third place finish.
The Wisconsin Valley Conference held its first conference meet of the season. Stevens Point and Merrill both entered Saturday with unblemished conference records.
The Panthers and Blue Jays met in the second match of the day and SPASH won game one, but Merrill took the next three and finished unbeaten on the day to maintain their conference lead.
Wausau East was the site of a tennis tournament. The Lumberjacks went unbeaten to come away with the best record on the day.
