MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson has taken a step toward a run for the U.S. Senate.
Thompson Monday says he filed documents to incorporate his Senate campaign committee, allowing him to raise money and build the organization.
Thompson, speaking on WTMJ radio, says he'll make a formal announcement soon.
Some Republicans are concerned Thompson will become part of a crowded competition with new-wave conservatives for the seat opened up by veteran Democrat Herb Kohl's retirement.
Thompson calls himself "the original conservative."
