MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Revenue is warning roll your own cigarette retailers that they must pay the required taxes for being both a manufacturer and a distributor.
The department said Friday it has sent retailers a notice of their legal obligations, including taxes that are owed and permits that must be obtained, and agents will be performing on-site visits to follow up. The department estimates there are between 50 and 100 roll-your-own machines in the state.
Anti-smoking advocacy group Smoke Free Wisconsin praised the action, saying some businesses offering roll-your-own cigarette machines are breaking state law by not paying the required taxes.
The group's executive director Maureen Busalacchi says making the cigarettes available at a cheap price attracts young smokers.
