Wis. DNR asks hunters to turn in bear ribs

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin wildlife officials are asking hunters to turn over rib sections from bears they kill this year.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the ribs will be used in an ongoing black bear population estimate. The study is designed to provide a picture of the population across the bear's primary range in northern and central Wisconsin.

Scientists will analyze the ribs for tetracycline, a compound volunteers and DNR staff included in bear bait piles across 32 counties this spring. The resulting data will be fed into population models.
