City of Stevens Point takes control of Centerpoint Marketplace

STEVENS POINT, WI (PRESS RELEASE) – The Mayor of the City of Stevens Point today announced the finalization of City control of the Centerpoint Marketplace.

After years of good faith efforts to try and find financially appropriate redevelopment alternatives for the Marketplace; today the City has taken control of the property via condemnation authority granted to the City under State Law.  "This allows our community to finally move forward with the greatest redevelopment opportunity in the City's history;  and that is moving Midstate Technical College downtown." Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson said, who also chairs the City's Community Development Authority.  "This process of control now being past us for the vast  majority of the mall, over 186,000 square feet, means this community together can turn a chapter in the proverbial novel that is this building." Halverson added.  "This building has been one of the most controversial aspects of community conversation over the last 30 years and today a great deal of that concern can go away."  Halverson said.  "The voters of this City stood by us and our plans to bring Midstate Technical College downtown by passing a referendum for the funds to carry out this project;  and the most difficult part of the process was finished today."  Halverson said.  "I want to thank the voters of Stevens Point for their support of this idea, as they, the voters, were the reason we were able to move so many steps forward towards revitalization today."  Halverson added.  "We will still have to go to court to decide final values for compensation to the former owners, but that will be done objectively through a court of law, protecting the rights of the former property owner, as well as the rights of the citizens of Stevens Point." Halverson said.
