Wis. Senate blocks school choice expansion

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Senate has approved a bill that blocks any further expansion of school vouchers.

The state budget Republican Gov. Scott Walker signed earlier this year expands vouchers beyond the city of Milwaukee, allowing them across Milwaukee County and in the city of Racine. Voucher opponents are worried that language in the budget provision could qualify other cities, such as Green Bay, Eau Claire, Madison and Superior.

Republican leaders promised a measure that would make it impossible for vouchers to expand any further. They delivered on Tuesday, presenting the bill to the full Senate.

The Republican-controlled body approved the measure on a voice vote. It goes next to the state Assembly.
