The Washington Square post office in downtown Wausau could shut its doors by the end of the year.
Post office officials say it is among more than 3,000 offices across the nation on the chopping block. They say as more people turn to email and social networking sites to communicate, fewer people are sending letters.
The U.S. Postal Service is facing an $8 billion loss.
Local officials say in efforts to save money, they plan to shut down the Washington Square location, which is about 3 blocks from the Wausau post office.
Officials say people in the community can still appeal that decision but the office is scheduled to close December 31, 2011.
