Voters file challenge to Wis. photo ID law

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The League of Women Voters' Wisconsin chapter has filed a lawsuit challenging the state's new law requiring voters to present photo identification at the polls.

The lawsuit, filed in Dane County Circuit Court on Thursday, asks a judge to declare the photo identification requirements unconstitutional. It contends the state constitution prohibits only felons and people ruled incompetent from voting. It maintains legislators don't have the authority to block a third group of people who lack photo identification from the polls.

The lawsuit names Gov. Scott Walker and members of the state Government Accountability Board as defendants. A Walker spokesman didn't immediately return a message. GAB spokesman Reid Magney says he hasn't seen the lawsuit and had no immediate comment.
