New voter ID law challenged in lawsuit

MADISON (WAOW) -- The League of Women Voters' Wisconsin chapter has filed a lawsuit challenging the state's new voter ID law.

The lawsuit asks a judge to declare the requirements unconstitutional.

It contends that legislators don't have the authority to block people who lack photo identification from the polls.

The lawsuit names Governor Scott Walker and members of the Government Accountability Board as defendants.

Governor Walker released a statement in reaction to the lawsuit:

"Requiring photo identification to vote is common sense -- we require it to get a library card, cold medicine, and public assistance.

I will continue to implement common sense reforms that protect the electoral process and increase citizens' confidence in the results of our elections."
