Senate rejects slimmed-down Obama jobs bill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate has scuttled jobs legislation aimed at helping state and local governments avoid layoffs of teachers and firefighters despite a campaign-style push by President Barack Obama this week.

Republicans unanimously opposed the measure on a 50-50 vote that fell well short of the 60 required to defeat the GOP filibuster -- just as Obama's larger $447 billion jobs measure fell victim to GOP stalling last week.

Despite the losses, Obama and his Democratic allies are acting like they've found a winning issue in repeatedly pressing popular ideas such as infrastructure spending and boosting hiring of police officers and firefighters.

Republicans say the president is more interested in picking political fights with them than seeking compromise.
