St. Bede Monastery in Eau Claire sells for $1M

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) -- The St. Bede Monastery in Eau Claire County has a new owner.

A subsidiary of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Foundation bought the 112-acre property for $1 million. The foundation plans to use the building for the university's child-care center.

The sale was announced Friday by the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict.

An Eau Claire Leader-Telegram report ( ) says 16 sisters were living at the monastery when it closed last year. The facility had opened in 1964, and at its peak in that decade it had 115 members.

Michaela Hedican was St. Bede's last prioress, the monastery's top-ranking sister. She says the members of St. Bede's are deeply saddened at letting their beloved monastery go, but they're grateful the facilities will continue to contribute to youth education.
