Public libraries offer electronic readers

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Soon you won't be able to judge every book by it's cover at public libraries in our area.

At the Marathon County Public Library, rows and rows of book shelves are filled with a wealth of information, but books are not the only way to find information at the library.

Officials said there will be more reasons to head to your local library.

Instead of checking out a book at the library, you might soon find yourself checking out an electronic reader, such as a Barnes and Noble Nook or an Amazon Kindle.

Library officials said they anticipate by January 1st, the electronic devices will be available for check out.

Card holders will be able to use the "Overdrive" system, an Internet service provided on the Marathon County Public Library web site to download e-books.

MCPL Manager Mike Hartkopf said offering the electronic readers will give people the chance to try out the new technology.

"I think there's always going to be people that want the feel and the hold of the book in their hands, but it's just another way for people to access the information. I think they both can exist going forward," said Hartkopf.

Liz Chiapuzio works at the library and she said the e-readers will be convenient for people on-the-go who usually carry books, "They don't have to worry about how thick or how heavy it is, or lugging it around, and they can have all of those right there and can download them at the split second no matter where they are."

But e-readers aren't for everyone.

Vadee Vang brings his library card and laptop to the Marathon County Public Library almost everyday, "I still prefer a book because I can touch it and I can also flip the pages and read it, if I need to go back to a page I can just re-read it."

Hartkopf said each library will have a set of e-readers and the devices will be pre-loaded with book titles.
