Major earthquake rocks Turkey, death toll continues to rise
TURKEY (WAOW)--Tens of thousands of panicked people flooded the streets Sunday after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the Province of Van. Over 85 people have died, and officials say that number will continue to rise.
ABC News reports after the quake hit, people started to fanatically dig through rubble to free others who were trapped. Eyewitnesses said screams for help were coming from beneath the piles of wreckage.
"We went to all the hospitals but haven't been able to find our friend," said one onlooker.
Frequent aftershocks hampered rescue efforts. Turkey is one of the world's most active seismic zones. Hundreds are hospitalized and medical supplies are urgently needed.
By nightfall, power saws were brought in to cut through debris. The darkness adding a new degree of difficulty to rescue efforts.
