Winter break on utility bills

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- In the cold winter months people struggling to pay for heat are getting a break.

Wisconsin Law states utility services providing heat cannot disconnect customers from November 1st to April 15th.

People who are currently disconnected must make arrangements with their local utility company to have service restored.

If you don't make payment arrangements than the utility is not required to reconnect the service.

A spokesperson from Wisconsin Public Service is encouraging customers having a hard time paying to see if they qualify for help.

"Just make sure that they open up the lines of communications, there might be programs out there such as energy services, that might be able to help them with whatever they're dealing with, " said Kelly Zagrzebski, WPS Public Relations.

WPS offers the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program, you can check out the income guidelines and if you qualify at this on their web site.
