NY man's possible Michelangelo on display in Rome

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- A possible 16th-century Michelangelo painting that hung for years in an upstate New York family's home is being displayed in Rome.

The Buffalo-area owner of the painting, Martin Kober, has worked for the last year to have it accepted in the art world. Scholars disagree on whether "La Pieta With Two Angels" was painted by Michelangelo or a collaborator.

The painting shows Mary with her arms open over the body of Jesus, who's held by angels. It goes on display Tuesday in a Renaissance art exhibit sponsored by the philanthropic Rome Foundation, which funded its restoration over the last six months.

Kober says a German baroness willed the painting to his great-great-grandfather's sister-in-law. He says it's a major milestone for the painting to be displayed with generally acknowledged works by Michelangelo and other Renaissance artists.
