Weston mother faces two charges of child neglect

WESTON (WAOW) -- A Weston mother is arrested for leaving her children alone in what investigators describe as horrendous conditions.

Brittney N. Hightower, 23, now faces two counts of child neglect.

According to the police report, Everest Metro investigators responded to Hightower's apartment on Tuesday after the apartment manager called police fearing the two girls were alone.

The manager says she heard banging coming up the apartment and decided to check it out.  She says she knocked on the apartment door but no one answered so she let herself in.  That's when she found the girls, ages 2 and 3 locked in a bedroom.  One of the children was completely naked, the other barely clothed.

When officers entered the apartment, they say they were immediately overwhelmed by the smell of urine.  Dog feces and urine were found on the floor.  Dirty diapers were found on the floor of the children's room and what appeared to be human waste smeared on the walls and floor.

The apartment manager told investigators that she'd heard rumors that Hightower was leaving her children by themselves to attend school.  She says Hightower always denied the rumors saying the children always had a babysitter.

When questioned by police Hightower told them the babysitter was with the children when she left school and must have left the girls alone. A neighbor told police the children had been left alone a number of times.

Hightower made her initial appearance Wednesday in Marathon County court.  She's currently out on signature bond.
