Bill puts new legislative boundaries in effect

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Republican-backed bill being circulated for co-sponsors in the Legislature would put new legislative boundaries that favor the GOP in effect starting a year sooner, making it more difficult for Democrats pursuing recalls of incumbents.

Currently, recall elections scheduled before the November 2012 general election would be run in lawmakers' old districts. However, the bill circulated Friday by Republican Sen. Mary Lazich would make the new districts take effect for purposes of recall elections starting Nov. 9 of this year.

That means any recall petitions and elections would be in the new more Republican-friendly boundaries drawn and approved by the GOP earlier this year.

The bill could be taken up by the Legislature next week, the final week it is scheduled to be in session this year.
