Saturday Sports Report - 10/29


(WAOW) - Level two of the high school football playoffs wrapped up Saturday. In Colby, the Hornets keep their season alive with a 28-13 win over Stratford.

Amherst advances to level three for the first time in school history by routing Bonduel 45-14.

Saturday also saw seven area teams vying for a spot in the state volleyball tournament. Tomahawk advanced to its third straight state tourney with a 3-0 win over Altoona. In division three, Spencer beat Kewaunee 3-2 to move on to state for the first time since 1974.


The State cross country meet took place at Ridges Golf Course Saturday. 

It started with Division 3 girls.  Molly Seidel of University Lake School near Milwaukee became just the second girl to win four state titles when she took first place.  Pittsville's Tory Palmer finished in eighth place and Jessi Krause ended in 13th place for the sixth place Edgar team. 

Oshkosh Lourdes was the first place team for Division 3. 

In Division 1, Ashley Eckhoff led the two-time champion Wausau East team with an 11th place finish.  But the Lumberjacks were seventh as a team.  Wausau West's Sarah Poirier was a 20th place finisher for the Warriors, who ran to a fifth place finish as a team. 

Next up was Division 3 boys.  Andrew Studinski set the pace for 11th place Marathon.  The Red Raider sophomore was a fourth place finisher.  Rosholt finished 5th as a team, led by Kyle Wallace in 16th place. 

The Nekoosa/Port Edwards team took second-place in Division 2 boys.  Mike Peterson got out in front for the Papermakers, finishing in 12th place.  Teammate Matt Eidenschink was right behind him in 18th. 

DC Everest's Jacob Dirkman and SPASH's Michael Larson had been battling in the Wisconsin Valley Conference all season, and they finished two spots apart in the Division 1 race. 

Dirkman was 20th for the Evergreens, who was eighth as a team.  Sam Anderson was behind him, taking the 39th spot. 

The Panthers' Larson was 18th overall, and his team finished in seventh.
