Preparing your car for winter

WAUSAU (WAOW)-- Iced over windows and frozen wiper fluid are some issues you probably don't look forward to once winter weather hits.

But there are some steps you can take to ensure your car is ready for winter.

Under the hood of your car is just one place to check before cold weather sets in.

Keith Kostroski is a mechanic at X-Factor Automotive Inc. in Wausau.

He said finding cracks in the belt is one way to see if your car needs maintenance.

"The cold weather is very hard on the belts and hoses, tires, starters, and batteries. It's important to get that stuff checked," said Keith Kostroski, X-Factor Automotive Inc..

He said there are other potential problem areas, "If your battery is weak, cars not going to start in the morning before work, if your anti-freeze is not up to par it's going to freeze."

Kostroski said you don't need to be a mechanic to get your car winter-ready.

He said you can use a penny to check the tread on your tires. If you insert the penny between the tread and if the tread is past the top of Lincoln's head your clear but otherwise he suggested going to a repair shop.

Some tips he recommended was buying new windshield wipers and a tire pressure gage.

"They're cheap, only a couple of dollars, something to throw in the glove box," he said.

But Kostroski said other parts should be looked over by a professional, "If you can have your antifreeze tested, probably have it done at a shop, and have your belts and hoses replaced."

He said if you don't, problems with your vehicle could cost you more down the road,"It's a very bad idea to have a part fixed after it's broken than to do preventative maintenance before hand, and get the issues that pop up over winter taken care of."

And with proper car care, you'll be ready to hit the road this winter.
