ST. LOUIS (AP) -- John Axford might not be a Cy Young candidate, but the Milwaukee Brewers pitcher can grow a good mustache.
The tongue-in-cheek American Mustache Institute on Friday announced that the pitcher is the winner of the 2011 Mustached American of the Year Award for his impressive Fu Manchu-style mustache.
Axford isn't even American -- he's from Canada -- but AMI chairman Aaron Perlut says Axford represents everything mustached Americans value: Humor, intelligence, good looks and height.
The institute says Axford took more than half of the nearly 1 million votes cast online.
The Mustache Institute is based in St. Louis but held its annual "Stache Bash" in Chicago on Friday, where the winner was announced.
