MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- Prescription drug abuse has become a growing problem in this country, and police in our area are taking part in programs to change the trend.
The drugs packed in boxes were collected in our area through police "take back" programs.
Some agencies offer annual collection programs, others like the wausau police department have permanent drop-off boxes.
The federal drug enforcement administration then picks up the drugs and takes them to be destroyed.
Detective Nathan Cihlar from the Wausau Police Department said people should not keep old medicine in their homes, "Out of people's houses and medicine cabinets so they are not accessible to kids or potential abuse and for the environmental reason. If they get in the water supply they could taint the water when flushed down the toilet. "
