UWSP's Welch named WIAC women's golfer of the year

MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Mary Welch received Player of the Year honors to lead the 10 individuals on the 2011 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Golf Team.

The team was determined by using the NCAA Division III GolfStat rankings immediately following the conclusion of the conference championship.  A player must have completed eight rounds in order to be considered.

Welch secured medalist honors at the WIAC championship, becoming the first individual in program archives to accomplish the feat.   She compiled a league-leading 78.5 stroke average during the fall and posted first-place finishes at the Doug Georgianni Memorial Invitational, UW-Oshkosh Invitational and UW-Stevens Point Mad Dawg Invitational.  Welch was an All-WIAC second team pick a season ago.

She is the third individual in Pointer history to capture the conference's player of the year honor, joining Michelle Pascavis (2007) and Jessica Urban (2008 and 2009).

Repeat selections on the All-WIAC team from a year ago included:  UW-Eau Claire's Sara Mattes (Player of the Year), Emily Swift and Catherine Wagner.  Swift and Wagner added first team laurels in 2009, while Mattes was a second team selection.  In 2008, Swift was a second team honoree.
