Wisconsin's primary date to change to August

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A bill that would change Wisconsin's fall primary date from September to August is slated to clear the state Assembly on Tuesday following a procedural move that blocked its passage last week.

Republicans who control the Assembly gave preliminary approval of the bill last week, but Democrats blocked its final clearance until Tuesday.

The primary is currently held on the second Tuesday in September, about a month and half before the November general election. State election officials worry that's not enough time to guarantee compliance with federal mandates that require states to get ballots to overseas and military voters ahead of federal elections.

The bill moves the primary to the second Tuesday in August.
