Possible cell phone restrictions on young drivers

WAUSAU (WAOW) --  Teen drivers could soon face a new regulation that would require them to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

Republican State Representative Jerry Petrowski introduced a bill that would restrict teenagers from using cell phones behind the wheel for the first nine months they have a driver's license.

Representative Petrowski says the bill has bi-partisan support.  THe new regulation would add to the other driving restrictions young drivers face.

"It is time to educate new drivers on how to best drive, and keep the distractions at a minimum. Having a cell phone is definitely a distraction," Rep. Petrowski said during a phone interview.

Violators would face a $50 fine for a first offense and between a $50 and $100 fine for any offenses after that.
