Candy for a good cause

SCHOFIELD (WAOW)--Quirt family dental offered children a sweet deal for donating their Halloween haul on Monday. Candy collected will be sent to troops overseas and for every pound donated, children earned a dollar.

Christian Medick hauled in two pounds of candy. "I worked really hard and I thought I had a lot more but, it is what it is," he said.

His sister founded Peyton's Promise. Quirt is matching every dollar handed out with a donation to the charity that helps stock local food banks.

"We're filling the food pantries with that money and as far as the troops go, we can't say enough nice things about our servicemen. they are the reason we sleep on a comfortable pillow at night," said Dental Hygienist Linda Nichols.

The buyback also promoted healthy habits. Each child received a new toothbrush.

"I understand it was Halloween, everybody likes a little candy but, you know, in small quantities," said Nichols.

Zachary Searls donated three pounds of the sweet stuff. As for what he plans on doing with it? "I'll put it in my savings account," he said.

Quirt Dental in Schofield collected more than 250 pounds of candy Tuesday. If you missed the buyback, dental employees say the Wausau branch on Bridge Street will be holding another event on Thursday.
