MENOMONIE (Press Release) - A number of missed opportunities, coupled with a goalie who stopped everything her way added up to a 1-0 UW-Stout loss to UW-Stevens Point in the quarterfinals of the WIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Tuesday at Nelson Field.
The Blue Devils (11-5-1), which came into the tournament as the third seed, had opportunities throughout the game that went wide, high and right into Pointer goalie Brittany Marx's arms.
Just minutes into the game, Stout had a wide open shot in front of the net, but the ball sailed high. With a shot off a corner kick from Grace Salwasser in the second half, Courtney Tideman got a head on the ball, moved it to another player, who headed it, but right into Marx.
The Pointers (11-7-0) got the game winner with 18 minutes left in the game when the Stout defense was pulled to their right of the goal. Kim Jobke passed the ball to Sammy Greer who made the shot count.
Stout pressed hard in the final 15 minutes. setting up four corner kicks in that time. Krista VanAartsen put a shot on Marx that she stopped, as did Salwasser.
Stout outshot Stevens Point 15-6 overall and put seven shots on net. Stout's Robbie Shelby recorded three saves.
The Pointers will be at UW-Whitewater, Thursday, Nov. 3, in a semi-final game.
