Some help for Portage Co. job seekers

(WAOW) -- We have an update on the recent closings around Portage County that have more than a hundred people hunting for a new job.

Since Stevens Point's job center closed a few years ago, employment experts said job seekers can come to facilities in Wisconsin Rapids or Wausau to find help. They can also go to the state's job search website.

About 100 people are out of work from the Ramada and Tilted Kilt in Stevens Point, which closed on Sunday. And about 40 more will be looking for new jobs after Hudson's in Plover closes next week.

State workforce leaders said they're planning a rapid response program for the former Ramada employees scheduled for Tuesday.

"We know this really unfortunate thing happened to you, but here are some things we can help you with and let's try to get you reconnected to employment as quickly as possible," said Workforce Development Area Manager Tom Younger.

In September, unemployment in Portage County was around 6%, which is lower than the 7% statewide average. The Ramada closed on October 30th. That month's job numbers are scheduled to be released later this week.
