AG: Recall election would not include Lt. Gov.

A recall election targeting the governor would not automatically include the lieutenant governor, even though they run on the same ticket in Wisconsin.

That's according to a formal opinion issued Thursday by Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.

Democrats said last month that an effort to recall Republican Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker over his contentious union rights law would begin Nov. 15, meaning an election could be held as early as next spring.

They have not targeted Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch.

Van Hollen's opinion says there would have to be separate petitions for each office and residents would have to vote for those offices separately.

The Wisconsin Government Accountability Board had asked for the opinion on the matter in September.
