Businesses work to prevent theft in Marathon County

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW)--Another Marathon County Business was burglarized. This time, the Cutie Pie Photo Studio in Weston.

Police say someone entered the backdoor after the store was closed and stole cash. Investigators are still searching for those responsible.

As law enforcement work to catch those responsible, they also look at ways to prevent these crimes.

A Lieutenant for the Marathon County Sheriff's Department tells Newsline 9 they are receiving calls from business owners concerned about the recent string of thefts.

The department turns some of those calls to the Marathon County Tavern League.

Tim Thomas is the Vice President for the League. He says they are working with taverns and bars in Marathon County to improve their security.

"Money is replaceable," says Thomas. "If you get hurt, someone gets killed. you can't back that up."

Thomas says adding security cameras and limiting the amount of money in the bar makes for a less attractive location for potential thieves.

While business work to improve their security, staying safe at home is also important.

Authorities say a good way to prevent theft in your own home is through the "Neighborhood Watch" program.

In Wausau, the police department is in charge of the program, but outside city limits that isn't the case.

Six years ago the Marathon County Sheriff's Department cut the "Neighborhood Watch" due to a lack of funding.

While the department sees the importance of "Neighborhood Watch" a Lieutenant says lack of county funding prevents plans in the near future.

If you are looking to start a "Neighborhood Watch" program in your community, the best place to start is the national website.
