Assembly limits attorney fees

The state Assembly has approved a bill aimed at checking how much money attorneys can collect through fees in consumer protection cases.

The GOP measure creates a presumption that three times the amount of damages would be sufficient but would allow a judge to award higher amounts.

Democrats fear the changes will keep attorneys from taking small claims cases. Republicans control the Assembly, though, and they forced the bill through on a 55-39 vote Thursday. The measure already has passed the state Senate. It goes next to Gov. Scott Walker for his signature.

Walker's spokesman says the governor supports the legislation. Republican lawmakers introduced the bill on Walker's behalf as part of the governor's special legislative session on jobs.
