MADISON (AP) -
The state Assembly has approved a bill that would prohibit the use of race in determining who gets college grants.
The Assembly spent nine hours debating the bill earlier this week after Democratic Rep. Peggy Krusick broke with her party and attached an amendment barring race as a factor in awarding the grants. Democrats ultimately used a procedural move to block majority Republicans from taking a final vote until early Friday.
The Assembly adopted the bill 58-35 with little debate early Friday morning. Democrats objected to sending the measure to the state Senate, though, meaning the bill can't go to that house until the end of the Assembly's next session day, currently scheduled for January.
