Christmas tree harvest in Merrill

MERRILL (WAOW)—The calendar may say November, but Christmas tree farmers in Wisconsin are hard at work.

"Its harvest time for us, we're in our busiest time of the year" High Ground Tree Farm owner David Black II told Newsline 9.

The farmer is continuing a family tradition of operating a 350-acre tree farm in Lincoln County.

"My Dad started the business in the early 70's and my sister makes wreaths and roping, my wife makes velvet bows and we all get involved somehow" Black said.

According to the National Christmas Tree Association, 27 million trees were sold last year accounting for more than $900 million in sales.

"This is the time of year when I can make a living; I work all year for this one time of year" Black said.

The yearly Christmas tree harvest typically begins in mid to late October.  Different species of trees are harvested at varying times in the season.

Merrill's High Ground Tree Farm sends their trees to buyers nationwide.  Though the majority of the harvest typically stays in the Midwestern United States, Black says "any place we can get a truck to haul them to, we'll ship them!"
