Weston bus route's fate will be decided by spring referendum

Posted:

WESTON (WAOW)--Village of Weston leaders voted unanimously to let taxpayers decide whether to save the bus line. The issue will be placed on the spring ballot.

That means route K will stop running at the end of this year and service will not be provided for 2012. If the referendum passes, the bus would start running in 2013.

Dozens of people spoke in front of the Village Board pleading with them to accept an ordinance that would have cut service by more than half, but Village leaders said they just don't have enough money to keep the line running next year.

"We have to look at the community and all the other people in the community that need that bus line more than we do," said James Binkowski, a Weston resident who said he and his family frequently use the bus to get around.

Village leaders said they have already raised taxes to balance next year's budget, and the referendum would have to be passed in order to fund the line. "I want to hear by referendum from the direct Weston taxpayers," said Weston Village President Fred Schuster in front of the crowd that packed the municipal building.

The Weston bus line will stop running at the end of this calendar year.
