Local people send holiday spirit overseas

MERRILL (WAOW) --  When Nancy Wilde looks at her granddaughters photo, she can't help but fight back the tears.

"I'm just so proud of her," Wilde says.

Wilde's granddaughter is serving her second tour in Afghanistan.

"Back home we are just crossing our fingers that nothing happens to her," Wilde said.

Along with others at the Merrill Area Community Enrichment Center, Wilde is making Christmas cards to send to the troops overseas. Each one, a hand written message of holiday cheer.

"I'm calling them heroes, that's what they are," Wilde said.

Wilde sees the inspiration in the face of her granddaughter. But, she knows there are so many more soldiers like her out there, faces she's never seen, people she wants to thank.

"It's really nice to have someone praying for you and sending you well wishes," Jane Deau, Director of the Merrill Area Community Enrichment Center.

Deau says their goal was to send 300 cards. By noon on Monday, they had already exceeded that number. Now, they plan to double it.

"We don't know them, don't know each name but our center is about giving back to the community and we're taking that extra step to go further," Deau said.

But they weren't the only ones supporting the troops.  Another group is sending movies overseas, so soldiers can catch the latest Hollywood hit.

"A movie is a connection to home," Shaun Eades, Store Manager at Family Video said.

Family video partnered with "Operation Entertain a Soldier."  They're asking customers to donate two dollars to buy a movie for a soldier. The goal is to send one million flicks.

"They are safeguarding our security, and we might not see that everyday but they are out there risking themselves, Eades said.

And as Wilde's granddaughter risks her life, her grandmother wants her to know: people are thinking about her, especially during the holidays.

"Just show them you care, until they are back," Wilde says.
