UPDATE: Here comes the winter weather - WAOW - Newsline 9, Wausau News, Weather, Sports

UPDATE: Here comes the winter weather

Today:  Cloudy and breezy with rain changing to sleet and snow. 2 to 6 inches accumulation likely.  High: 37.  Wind: Becoming NW 15-25

Thursday:  Partly or mostly cloudy and chilly.  High: 36.  Wind: WNW 10-15

The wintry storm we have been projecting for the last few days is still slated to bring some messy weather to the area today. The only aspect of the storm that has changed is where the heaviest snow will fall. At this point it looks like up to 6 inches of snow is likely for the northeastern part of the area, around Antigo, Crandon, White Lake, Wabeno, and Laona. Much of the rest of the northwoods and most of central Wisconsin will likely end up with 2 to 4 inches. Therefore, the National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNINGeffective through late afternoon for Menominee, Langlade, Forest, and Florence counties. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect through this afternoon for most of the rest of the area. The only counties not included in any warnings and advisories are Taylor, Price, Iron, and Ashland counties. These areas in the far northwest will likely have an inch or less of snow. With rain, sleet, and snow in the area for today and a gusty northwest wind of 15-25 mph, it will feel more like Winter than Fall. High temps will remain steady in the mid to upper 30s.

The weather should calm down for the Thursday through Saturday time period and temps will gradually warm back up. Thursday will still feel winter-like with partly or mostly cloudy skies and high temps in the mid 30s. On Friday a weak warm front moving through the area could produce a light rain or snow shower in the northwoods, otherwise we should have a few breaks of sunshine during the afternoon and high temps around 40s. Saturday will be breezy and milder under partly sunny skies. The mercury should top out in the mid 40s on Saturday.

Another storm system moving into the Midwest will bring more clouds on Sunday and Monday as well as a chance of light rain. I am forecasting a 30% chance on Sunday and a 40% chance on Monday. High temps on both days should be in the mid to upper 40s.

Have a nice Wednesday! Meteorologist Justin Loew. 4:30am, 9-November-2011
