Elections board discusses college ID requirements

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin technical college officials are urging the board that oversees Wisconsin elections to allow their students to use their school IDs to vote.

Wisconsin's new voter identification law requires voters to show photo identification at the polls. College and university student IDs would qualify under the law.

The Government Accountability Board said in September, though, that technical college IDs wouldn't count. Board staff said according to their reading of the statutes Republican lawmakers wanted to exclude them.

The board met Wednesday to revisit that interpretation. Paul Gabriel is the executive director of the Wisconsin Technical College District Boards Association. He told the board he was horrified at its interpretation. He says technical colleges are accredited and students' IDs should be included under the law.
