Security costs for gov., lt. gov. have doubled

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The cost of protecting Wisconsin's governor, lieutenant governor and family members has more than doubled since they took office about a year ago.

The State Patrol and the governor's office say increased threats against Republican Gov. Scott Walker, his family and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch are the main reason for the increased security costs. Walker also has two residences, including his home in Wauwatosa. Unlike former Gov. Jim Doyle, Walker has two teenage sons still living at home.

Documents released to the Journal Sentinel ( under the state's open records law show the cost of protecting Walker, Kleefisch and family members totaled about $611,000 from November 2010 to August 2011. That's more than twice as much as the $259,000 it costs to protect Gov. Jim Doyle from November 2009 to August 2010.
