Eddie Murphy backs out of Oscars

(CNN)--Eddie Murphy will not be hosting the Oscars after all.

The actor and comedian quit today in an apparent show of support for the show's former producer, Brett Ratner.

Murphy got the hosting gig after Ratner signed on.

But, Ratner resigned after he used an anti-gay slur during an interview for his new comedy "Tower Heist" - which also stars Murphy.

The head of the The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says he respects Murphy's decision and wishes him well.

Murphy said in a statement that he was looking forward to being part of the show, but that he's "sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

The Oscars will be held on February 26th in Hollywood.
