Dick Wheeler, a longtime journalist who covered Wisconsin politics and founded a popular website that bore his name, has died. He was 67.
His daughter, Gwyn Guenther, said Friday that Wheeler died at his Madison apartment earlier that morning. The cause of death was unknown.
Wheeler roamed the halls of the Wisconsin state Capitol since the late 1970s, reporting on the inner workings of government initially for United Press International and more recently for his own website www.thewheelerreport.com .
Wheeler was born in Pennsylvania and previously worked in Ohio, covering the 1970 Kent State shootings.
He was well known in the Capitol for his encyclopedic knowledge of state government and the inner workings of the Legislature. His website was a family business, with his daughter and son-in-law working by his side.
