World War II Veteran and Iraq veteran share stories

ANTIGO (WAOW)--It is a day to remember those who have served their country.

Evergreen Terrace in Antigo is home to two veterans. One is 99 year old Ed Vavruska. He was 25 and living in Hawaii when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Three weeks later, he enlisted in the Navy and went on to serve at  Iwo Jima. Ed said, "We would land and go about 10 feet, then we had to dig a foxhole, where we stayed for about 7 months."

Ed was honored by residents at Evergreen Terrace. So was Gerald Stefanez who served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1961. Gerald served as a Veterinarian Technician at White Sands Missle Range in New Mexico.

During the ceremony, singers sang the Star Spangled Banner the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and Tommie Stuckert, who served in Iraq spoke.  Stuckert talked about the importance of remembering not only those who served, but those who didn't make it back. He says three members of his unit were killed while serving.

A sobering reminder of the ultimate sacrifice some service members make.
